Everyone needs to dye

 Everyone needs to dye

Why should we dye?

This article was originally planned to be a champion for the downtrodden dye in New World, back when no-one was particularly interested in them. It lingered on the backburner until the introduction of Transmog, where dyes have finally come into their own and received some attention. You can find information on the various dyes, how to make them and where to find the ingredients, as well as a list of the rare dyes that are sometimes available.

Of course, the reason to dye is because it looks good. Being able to dye our skins has opened up a world of possiblity for individual expression and style. Your appearance forms part of your identity and dyes allow you to make it truly yours.

How to dye

You can access the dye interface by left-clicking on an item and selecting Dye from the context menu.

The dye interface

You can see all of the dyeable items you are wearing and their individual dye slots. Not every item has the same amount of areas that can be dyed. Additionally, some items have undyeable parts, which means you need to work with the existing colour to some degree.

Dye Skins or Items

You can choose to dye either the skin or the underlying item, by clicking the checkbox in the Mask column.

Choose Colours

Colours can be selected by clicking on the colour swatch. This will usually default to Show Available Only, which will allow you to choose from any dyes you have previously received from the shop or external events like Prime rewards, plus all the dyes you are carrying in your inventory. When you click on these colours, they will preview on the item.

Show Available and Purchasable

You can also choose Show Available and Purchasable, which will add the current shop dyes to your list.

Show All

Finally, you can choose Show All. This will show you every colour that has ever been available and is quite useful for previewing colours before you craft them. When you hover a colour, it will show up on that area of the skin, however, unlike with available dyes, it will not stay when you move your mouse off it. Which makes it hard to preview combinations of colours.

No dyes are used until you Confirm your choices, so you can carry dyes on you and select colours to see how they look together without actually spending the dye until you are happy.

How to get dyes

You can get dyes from the Trading Post, your Faction vendor, the Cash Shop, some Events and shops, rare Prime and Twitch drops, or you can craft them with Cooking skill.

Crafting dyes

Dyes can be made at the Kitchen in any settlement. The recipes are learned at various skill levels and you will need a kitchen of the tier appropriate to the skill level. Just use a Tier V kitchen to be safe!

Each dye recipe takes 2 of one pigment and 1 of another, plus 3 water. You can see a chart linking pigments and resulting dyes below.

Pigment farming

To get the pigments you need for making dyes, you’ll have to harvest Prismablooms which are relatively scarce resources. There are about ten flowers in each zone and you can get from 2 to 6 pigments from each flower. Make sure you have a yield buff on from the Luck’s Labor song and a sickle with a yield bonus.

It is worth searching for or setting up Routes in Aeternum map to make it easier to find these scattered flowers.
