Which gem do I need again? Your guide to expeditions

This guide will be outdated when Season 3 is released on October 3, 2023. It will remain on this page for historical purposes. We plan to publish a new guide soon. See the Rise of the Angry Earth PTR patch notes to find out what we know so far.

Expeditions provide some of the best rewards in New World and mutations are the most utilised end-game PVE content. So, it’s important to know what you’re dealing with and how to approach each dungeon. Most expeditions are inhabited by one creature type, so your Ward and Bane gear is important. We’ve provided a handy chart below so you can quickly reference which Wards and Banes you need for each dungeon and have included the gem for your weapon that converts some of your damage to the elemental type those creatures are most weak to. You’ll notice that the Ennead has two creature types and the same goes for mutated Starstone, as the Amrine section is Lost.

Each dungeon has its own personality and it’s good to get to know when to fight and when to run, where to group up the mobs and what kind of damage they are doing to you. Lish has plans to write up personalised guides for each expedition, but in the meantime we will link to existing guides online.

The Amrine Excavation

The Amrine Excavation is the first expedition you are likely to encounter. Your main questline will direct you to visit it, just north of Corinth Capital settlement in Windsward.

The Starstone Barrows is the next expedition on your main questline and can be found beneath the spectacular shattered tower outside of Oxboro Capital settlement in Everfall. Starstone is known particularly for its laser puzzles, which will instantly kill you if you touch them.

The Depths is an expedition beneath the caves of the Restless Shores. Once defeated, you have a chance of receiving his helmet, so you can look just like him.

Weaknesses: Fire (30%), Slash (20%)

Weapon Gem: Ruby

Recommended level: 60

Weaknesses: Lightning (30%), Strike (20%), Void (15%)

Weapon Gem: Topaz

Strong Weapons: War Hammer, Void Gauntlet

Tempest's Heart

Enemy type: Corrupted

Recommended level: 60 (570+ Gear Score)

Weaknesses: Arcane (30%), Thrust (20%), Nature (15%)

Weapon Gem: Sapphire

Strong Weapons: Spear, Rapier, Bow

Bosses: Isabella, Neishatun

Your main story quest will finally take you to Tempest’s Heart, deep within Myrkgard in Shattered Mountain. Many fresh 60s are eager to do this immediately, but it is recommended that you wait for your Expertise to be 600 before taking the quest in the church outside. This quest awards full sets of Tempestuous armour and weapons for every class, which can only be upgraded to Legendary (and thus receive an additional perk) if it drops at 590+ GS. Check out our Gypsum guide for tips on increasing your Expertise.

Empyrean Forge

Enemy type: Human

Recommended level: 60 (550+ Gear Score)

Weaknesses: Slash (15%)

Weapon Gem: your choice

Strong Weapons: Great Sword, Great Axe, Hatchet, Sword

Bosses: Ifrit (Arcane 30%, Ice 20%), Commander Marius (Ice 20%)

The newest expedition is an impressive underground forge found in the icy slopes of Great Cleave. Why did we include it next, instead of at the end? Well, while the boss fights are challenging, the mechanics are easily learned, and this expedition is one of the most enjoyable to complete. Make sure you have your in-game sound on for the music!

The Ennead

Enemy type: Ancient and Corrupted

With the Brimstone Sands update, came a mixed type expedition in the heart of the Great Pyramid. While the majority of the dungeon is Ancient, there is a substantial Corrupted section, including the General Crassus boss fight, so this is an opportunity to put your Gear Sets to good use.

In the deep south of Cutlass Keys, there lies a pirate themed expedition. While there are lots of fun mechanics in this dungeon, we’ve placed it last due to the horrible fight with Nereid and her tiny arena at the end.
