Aeternum Fashion Tips

 Aeternum Fashion Tips

What to wear?

It’s all very well to choose gear that’s effective in combat, but the most important thing in Aeternum is how your character looks. After all, the avatar fills a good part of your screen while you’re playing, and it’s also how you present yourself visually to other players. New World is a social, multiplayer game after all. Whether you just want your enemies to quake in fear when they recognise you, or like to peacock around town, you’re going to need to know a bit about fashion.

Character Creation

It’s worth taking a bit of time in Character Creation, as there are currently no options to change this once you enter the game (we’re always hoping though!). There are no sliders to adjust features, but a good selection of presets that give your character a distinct look.

New World: Aeternum brings new hairstyles, facial hair, and tattoos. Some of these are really cool, especially the new hairstyles and the neck tattoo. Have a browse through all the options with Lish and Landi in this video from the Open Beta.

Transmog

The next step is clothing. The new archetypes come with some pretty stylish gear but unfortunately it doesn’t have great stats. This is something you will come across throughout your journey in Aeternum, and luckily there is a solution! Transmog. Weird word, what is it, and how does it work?

Collecting Appearances

First of all, you need to collect item appearances. This happens automatically when you get a new item. You can see all the item appearances you have collected, and the ones you don’t have yet, in the Stylemancer. That’s an NPC who stands in front of the Outfitters station in every settlement.

The coloured icons you see are the appearances that you have collected and the dark ones are those you don’t know yet. You can preview any appearance before you transmog it, and if you want one that you don’t have, you can look it up on nwdb.info to discover where to find it.

Your item appearance collection is account-wide, so any appearances you’ve collected on one character will be available to transmog with any of your characters.

Transmog Tokens

To turn an appearance into a skin, you’ll need a Transmog Token. Up until the end of Season 5, these are available as free loot in the game. Each character can collect one Transmog Token Purse per week, which contains one Transmog token. We’re not sure whether these will continue to be available into Season 6, as they are not in the Open Beta files or mentioned in AGS’ transmog article.

However, you will still be able to get Transmog Tokens from the Cash Shop, Season Pass rewards, and new Event rewards such as the Trials of Aeternum launch event. Your transmog token balance is shared across all your characters.

Skins

Once you’ve turned an appearance into a skin using a transmog token, you can then apply it to any armour or weapon item. It will go into your wardrobe, which is accessible by clicking on an equipped piece of armour or weapon and choosing “Change Skin”. Skins are account-wide, so you can access them on all characters, regardless of server or region.

This will show you all the skins you have access to for that slot. You can also navigate to other slots without leaving this menu. Skins come from a range of sources, not just transmog. These include:

  • Cash Shop
  • In-game Events
  • Twitch drops
  • Prime Loot (discontinued)

There are icons to show you the source of the skin, although no way to tell between transmogged and skins received through events or the Season Pass. Also, some event skins show the cash shop icon.

Dyes

Of course, the thing that makes skins really stand out is dyeing them. When the transmog system came in, we also got the ability to dye skins, which made a huge difference in being able to make old sets suit our individual style. You can craft dyes in game, buy them from the Cash Shop, earn them as PVP track rewards, buy them from the Faction vendor, or receive them during events (usually Springtide Bloom).

Although skins are account-wide, the dye applied to them is character specific. So if you have dyed a skin on one character, when you wear it on a different character, the skin will have the default colours and you’ll need to dye it again.

We have a detailed article explaining all about dyes and every colour available, that you should definitely read.

If you want to get a preview of how a skin is going to dye before you spend a transmog token on it, you can check out this awesome 3D model with interactive dye zones on New World Buddy.

Enjoy

Fashion is a fun part of New World and surely that’s what games are all about. I hope this article helps you on your own journey of self-expression.
