Artifacts are special items that have unique perks. There are various ways to acquire them, from defeating specific enemies in mutated expeditions, trials, or in the open world; to earning them on the PVP track or as Season Pass rewards. You can view a list of Artifacts on New World Database, but if you’d like some information about the quests required to unlock the perks or what to add as the final perk when upgrading, you might find this article useful.
You can only equip one artifact in each major category, so one Armor, one Weapon, and one Jewelry. Shields are counted as Armor for this purpose, so you could have both a sword and shield artifact at the same time. Artifacts can only be obtained once per character, and cannot be locked or deleted.
Once you have found your Artifact, you’ll need to perform three tasks to unlock the perks. When you equip an Artifact, the quest will appear in your Journal. Completing all the objectives, including upgrading the Artifact at the Gypsum kiln, will remove the quest from your Journal. You can only have 10 active Artifact quests at a time and if you cancel one to equip another Artifact, the progress will be lost.
